New Year, Greater Me

I really dislike the new year, new me vibes that are shoved in our faces every January

It's a sly suggestion that we are not good enough as we are and we need to completely transform ourselves every year, before slipping back into old ways and habits.

I’ve decided to coin a new phrase - ‘New year, Greater me’

Because you are good enough as you are.

More than good enough.

But I know you crave something more. Whether that’s more flexibility, freedom, autonomy or proper remuneration. You deserve that, and I want it for you too.

Goals don’t need to be scary big things. They aren’t a stick to beat yourself with when you don’t quite achieve them. They should be motivational tools to push you in the direction you want to be moving towards.

Here is a (hopefully) simple method to help break things down in order to live an intentional and purposeful life, on your own terms.

  • So first let’s start with your intentions for 2023.

Your intentions are how you want to spend the majority of your time and how you want to feel. When doing this with my clients and for myself I like to distill this down into a phrase or a word. In 2021 my word was ‘contentment’ (I covered this in last month's newsletter) and 2022 it was ‘emily 2.0’ (rediscovering myself post 2 kids and a pandemic). I’m still deliberating my 2023 word!

Often, we focus first on tangible markers with the aim of evoking a *feeling*. I am sure you have examples of markers you have chased and once achieved the feeling never came. So focusing on the feeling and how you thread that across all areas of your life means you are more likely to embody that feeling.

  • Identify 3 ‘chunky’ things you want to achieve in 2023

Using your intention as your north star - think about what you want to achieve this year. Are there work goals you want to focus on? Hobbies you want to master? Saving goals you want to hit?

Limiting this to 3 things allows you to become intentional and focused.

  • Break these down into goals for Q1 (Jan-March)

How do your ‘chunky’ things break down into smaller goals? What is feasible to achieve over the next 3 months?

  • What are your goals for January?

Break down your Q1 goals into goals for January. What is feasible to achieve this month?

  • What actions can you incorporate into your to do list?

My coaching philosophy is all about simplifying things down and making small, consistent and sustained changes. Focus on improving your goal focus areas by 1% each day and you will then have a powerful compound effect. The easier it is to incorporate into your to-do list, the easier it will be to create sustained habits (Atomic Habits by James Clear is a great book to read regarding this if your goal is to read more in 2023!)
